![]() With fantasy now a mainstream commercial genre, this personality and vulnerability is unusually endearing. There are just enough idiosyncrasies and awkward moments that instead of presenting itself as an edifice of edited literary erudition, it feels very much like the personal passion project which it is. None of this is to say that “Priest” is the greatest literary work ever. Even better, it carries the theme through the next fifty or so chapters with deft uses of detail, set-up and pay-off, and subtle genre references which reward the experienced fantasy fans and novices alike. It is billed as ‘hard-boiled fantasy’ and succeeds in establishing that feel within the first chapter. Colville’s first book only heightens the enjoyment of what he achieves in this binge-worthy tale of intrigue, commitment, and loss. “Priest” (Matthew Colville, Amazon e-book, 4.99 USD) is the most engaging read I’ve had in a long time. ![]()
